The Nativity Fast is the Church’s long walk toward Christmas — but for children, forty days can feel like forever. This devotional gives them a friend for every single one of them.
Each day introduces one saint the Church remembers during the fast: a bishop who slipped gold through a window at night, a boy of fourteen who would not lie to save his life, a farmer who gave away his last ox and could not stop smiling, a monk who lived on top of a pillar, a prophet carried through the sky by an angel while trying not to spill the stew. These are not tidy moral lessons. They are true stories, told with warmth and honesty, about real people who loved Christ.

Written for Orthodox families following either calendar tradition. The readings are numbered by the forty days of the Nativity Fast — Day 1 through Day 40 — rather than by civil calendar dates. Families following the New Calendar can begin on November 15, while those following the Old Calendar can begin when November 15 falls according to their parish’s calendar (currently November 28 on the civil calendar). Either way, simply begin on Day 1 and follow the forty-day journey to the Nativity.
